Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. - AL I:40

Saturday October 11th 2008 – 6:30am Dave Solinas from Florida writes, "All the best. Have a wicked day in celebration of our Prophet the Prince-Priest the Beast."

6:15am For the history buffs: Born on this date in 1868 was Percy Bullock, who at the age of twenty-four joined the Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawn; assuming the motto Frater Levavi Oculos, which means “I will lift up mine eyes.” ……… also, on October 11, 1911, Aleister Crowley met Mary d’este Sturges at a party given by the dancer Isadora Duncan. He asked, “Have you ever had a serpent’s kiss?” and before she could answer yes or no, he bit her on the wrist. The story has it that she developed blood poisoning and fell in love with him!

Friday October 10th 2008 – 12:15pm Awhile back I added a section onto our website which is titled - THE BLOODLINE of Grady Louis McMurtry’s branch of A.'.A.'., adding 'Our AA branch has an undisputed direct link going back from student to student to Aleister Crowley' ... but I got totally sidetracked and never added the 'History' section at the bottom of this page explaining our lineage in detail. I have now done so. Hopefully it will address some of the recent questions that have come in ...

10:15am Frank writes, “Did I miss anything interesting from the ‘History’ section over the last few days?” …. Reply: Well, in truth lots happened on the 8th but not much on the 9th; a few things of interest - Pascal Beverly Randolph was born on October 8, 1825  at 70 Canal St in New York to a black woman named Flora Beverly, who was said to have been a black princess from Madagascar and to a white father, Edmund Randolph. His father, although not of royal stock, was well known in his own sphere. He had been the Governor of the state of Virginia, was present at the constitutional convention during the birth of the United States, was the Attorney General to President George Washington and in 1794 he became Secretary of State. The marriage between Flora and Edmund was short-lived and his parents separated early, his mother was to die at an early age from one of the many epidemics prevalent at the time. He is credited with being the first overt spokesman in the west of sexual ‘gnosis’ which he claimed had been hidden for centuries in layers of religious symbolism. He is said to be the founder of The Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor which is also known as the Brotherhood of Eulis. He is the author of The Magia Sexualis. On July 29, 1875 Randolph shot himself in head and died in Toledo Ohio. After his death he was succeeded by a Mr. Freeman B Dowd on April 15, 1907, who was succeeded by Dr. Edward H. Brown, who in turn was succeeded by R. Swinburne Clymer. ……. Also, Frank Patrick Herbert, the author of the sc-fi classic Dune (1963) was born on October 8, 1920 in Tacoma, Washington. And Robert de Grimston was born on October 8, 1935 in Shanghai, China. His true name was Robert Moore. Years later he and his wife Mary Anne Maclean changed their last name to de Grimston and established the group called The Process Church of the Final Judgment.

7:30am Tomorrow's CROWLEYMAS celebration is being held over at Ben's apartment starting at 3:30pm and going until whenever. Due to all the recent 'headaches' that Ben and I have had, we've had little time to plan anything - so help! Bring food, snacks and drinks ... they will be appreciated. They will be eaten!!! Call Ben or email me for directions if you don't know where Ben lives. [See: BERKELEY TOUR: I'm number No.5, Ben is No.9 - Click Here. Scroll down to see a photo of his building.]

7:06am Damn this Mercury Retrograde! Somehow the new Microsoft Window’s updates that I downloaded on Wednesday night have defaulted my browser and now it didn't recognize my Homestead website nor did it even allow me to go on-line to the main website; it ‘defaulted’ my password automatically on my computer. Say what? Everything else on my computer, every other program, is just fine and working OK! What gives? Does Microsoft have it out for Homestead? Anyway, the jest is that I had to take Homestead completely off my computer and I re-download it to see if, starting fresh, the ‘new’ download will be recognized. And luckily, it is ... but with a few slight problems. 95% of my website was downloaded but some pages never came back. Even the Homestead rep was of no help, never heard of such a thing. Tried for hours upon hours to jog the pages out of the black hole and down onto my website with no luck. At least nothing important was eaten by the 'plastic monster' except the main page of the blog ... and, rather than spending hours on the phone again with Homestead rep trying to resolve it ... I simply deleted the old shell and remade a new one. Hence, we are hopefully back up and running. Yes, I'm sorta back up & running. ... and finally, I want to thank all the concerned people who were worried about me not posting and, knowing my bad heart, proceeded to send me emails asking, and I quote one as the flavor of many – “I hope you’re OK and you haven’t died.” ... Now how am I suppose to answer that, especially if I died ... or maybe I did and it's my ghost typing away at the keyboard!

7:00am For the history buffs: Edward Davis Wood Jr was born on this date in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1924. Shortly after the Japanese attacked Pearl Hardbor he enlisted in the Marines and secretly wore a brassiere and panties beneath his uniform when he went into combat on the tiny island of Tarawa. He later become a Hollywood film maker known for the most awful ultra-low budget B-movies ever made; such as Glen or Glenda, The Bride of the Monster and the classic Plan 9 From Outer Space. Toward the end of his life he was reduced to making bad pornographic movies like Orgy of the Dead and writing schlock transvestite-themed novels which drew from his own fetish experiences. In the end Wood become greatly depressed and spent a great deal of time in the bottom of whisky bottles. Evicted from his Hollywood apartment, Wood and his wife moved into the bungalow of an actor friend and only days after this move, on December 10, 1978, he died of a heart attack. He was only 53. ……… and Jim Eshelman was born on this date in Rochester, Indiana in 1954 . He was a student of Phyllis Seckler and, along with Anna-Kria King, he was one of the three founding members of The Temple of Thelema in 1989 in Los Angeles, California. It was to be an ‘outer vehicle’ of Jane Wolfe’s lineage of the AA. The Temple of Thelema became the ceremonial and initiatory vehicle of the College of Thelema, which Phyllis Seckler (Soror Meral) had founded in 1973. Jim Eshelman published The Mystical and Magical System of the AA in 1993. …….. and finally, how cannot I not mention that Kuriyama Chiaki was born October 10th 1984 on Honshu Island in Japan, she is a noted Japanese actress and model. She made her Hollywood debut in director Quentin Tarantino's 2003 film Kill Bill, Volume I as Gogo Yubari, the manriki-wielding schoolgirl yakuza bodyguard of Tokyo mob mistress O-Ren Ishii with such classic lines in English as "bingo" and "hi," and the phrase, "You call that begging? You can beg better than that. " Anyway, Gogo Yubari is O-Ren Ishii's extraordinarily sadistic 17-year-old bodyguard who dresses in a stereotypical Japanese schoolgirl uniform. Despite the fact that she performs many assassinations with a tantō, she attempts to kill Black Mamba with a manriki. She is killed in one-on-one combat with The Bride at the "House of Blue Leaves… She also played Agi, the Bird-Catching Sprite in Takashi Miike’s film from 2005 titled The Great Yokai War (2006).

Tuesday October 7th 2008 – 9:00am My friend Frank wrote, "Gee Jer 93. I went onto EBAY and checked out the toast. I noticed 'questions & answers' at the bottom but every time I tried to read them I kept getting forwarded to some EBAY page unrelated. But I notice on your page on-line that you have the full questions and answers. How is this possible? How did you read them? [wink wink] Frank 93s." ....... Reply: Divine Worship. ??? .... and did you notice that as of this morning two people have actually bid on the 'toast' ? It's up to £0.98. Hey everyone, there is only five days left if you want to bid on this!

6:30am If you haven’t seen the Holy Toast on EBAY yet, [see blog entry of Oct.2nd 3:15am for details] ... we have been given permission by the Divine Temple of the Holy Toast (open 24 hours a day, Monday to Sunday. Coach parties welcome. Miracles by appointment. Souvenirs available) to preserve it in detail on our website. We are humbled, no, we a greatly humbled. Click HERE to enjoy the Holy Toast over and over again but each time you click on this web page be sure to gentle bow, pay respect and throw bread crumbs over your left shoulder.

6:15am We are proud to present another writing by Grady Louis McMurtry. First, I want to thank Ed Wormuth and wife for typesetting and computer entering this latest installment titled The Dynamics of Equilibrium. Their efforts have been greatly appreciated. There are two versions of this Grady article; this is the first, the second is still being computer entered. …. In Grady’s bio - IN THE NAME OF THE BEAST, Volume I – 1918-1962 – it states - “It is not known exactly when Grady began writing, or rather rewriting, an essay titled The Dynamics of Equilibrium, but it is presumed this occurred toward the end of 1944. It took awhile for him to finish it and longer still for him to do the rewrites after Crowley had read it, although we know that around this period of time Grady was putting the final touches on the manuscript. It would end up to be about seven typed pages in length. To understand the nature of this essay it might be best to simply look at one of the original typed copies, for scribbled across a copy in Grady’s own handwriting is the following: “To illustrate wherein the economics whereby man lives effect his aspiration to godhead and how these economics may be altered under certain conditions to encourage instead of hampering this aspiration.”  We know that Grady gave a copy of this essay to Aleister Crowley although we don’t know all his views after reading it. Some claim a hint might be found in the penned verses found at the bottom of Crowley’s copy, which reads: “Do show me your Velasquez; I’m blinder than a bat. My wooden leg is very stiff, so please to massage that! The odontologist may try the best of all adventures. And cure his face-ache cleverly by polishing his dentures!” Of course these verses probably have nothing to do with Grady’s essay. We do know that in a letter dated March 16th 1945 Grady tells Crowley that he has finally done the rewriting on this piece. He further writes, “taking your criticism of ‘but what does it mean’ to heart I have rewritten entire sections of it - leaving off everything I possibly could that might tend to confuse the issue.” He also added a general outline at the beginning so that it would “be helpful in orienting yourself if some passage is obscure and you want to know what its relationship is to the subject as a whole.” Grady continues throughout the letter describing how he pursued the editing. In further elaboration, in a letter to Crowley dated April 2nd, Grady writes, “Still no word from you concerning my revision of ‘The Dynamics of Equilibrium.’  I really must get busy on ‘The Evolution of Economics’ in which I intend to go into the economic side in much greater detail - even bringing in one general section on finance which I had to leave out because it was supplementary rather than essential. Also ‘The Trend of Social Change’ in which I will have room to expound the unlimited possibilities of education, research and the application of Thelema to a high energy civilization.” (Red Flame No.12, Ca: Berkeley 2005) pg. 86-87) … Anyway, we here all hope that you enjoy reading this little gem.

6:00am For the history buffs: The American master of terror, Edgar Allen Poe, was found lying almost unconscious in the gutter outside Ryan’s saloon on Lombard Street in Baltimore. He was taken to the local hospital where he remained delirious with tremors and hallucinations. He went in and out of a coma over the next few days, was even calm and lucid at times, but finally he lapsed into a delirious state, became combative, and required restraint. He died on his fourth day in the hospital; October 7, 1877. He was only 39 years old, he had always suffered from bouts of depression and madness and even attempted suicide once in 1848. His death certified states that the cause of Poe’s death was “congestion of the brain.” He was buried in a cemetery next to Westminister Hall at Fayette and Greene Streets. His poem The Raven had appeared in the New York Evening Mirror in January 1845 and was a critical and commercial success. The Fall of the House Of Usher (1839) and The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841) are arguably two of his best short stories. …...….. also, Arnold Crowther was born on this date in Chatham, Kent, England in 1909. He grew up to become a skilled stage magician at sleight-of-hand, ventriloquism, and puppeteering. He had a strong interests in paganism and witchcraft. He was married to the noted witch Patricia Crowther and would become a famous English Witch in his own right. He authored such books as Let’s Put on a Show (1964), Linda and the Lollipop Man (1973), Yorkshire Customs (1974), Hex Certificate (late 1970s). His greatest claim to fame in witchcraft is that he was the person responsible for introducing Gerald B Gardner to Aleister Crowley in 1947. He died on May 1, 1974.

Monday October 6th 2008 – 5:45pm No Carol, it's not a typo. The word is vijnana not vagina.  :)

4:00pm To Carol who asks, "What type of yoga do you favor, out of curiosity?" ... Reply. Yoga simply implies a method of 'Union' of which there are many types. Part of me enjoys Jnana yoga (Union through Knowledge) but I am often put off by the continual banter of 'spiritual knowledge' above all else. I am not an escapist trying to alleviate the ills of my circumstances, I am a Thelemite who incarnated in order to gain an experience which is bathed more so in practical, mundane or 'profane knowledge.' This is why I have always called my personal yoga - Vijnana yoga, a term most likely considered black by Hindu standards. Vijnana is derived by adding the Hindu prefix 'vi' to the noun Jnana which tends to diminish or invert the original meaning of the word. In other words, to me, I want 'knowledge' here now, of the flesh, of worldly things around me, which is why I incarnated. In Hindu philosophy there are many interpretations of the word 'vijnana' but I adhere to the belief which states that when our body and consciousness ceases to exist; there is that which survives and it becomes vijñāna (“germ of consciousness”) in the womb of a new mother in quest of an incarnation. Is this evil? It all depends on whether or not you consider this world a tomb or a playground.

3:15pm To address a question that came in over the weekend. - What many modern Christians fail to realize is that during the Hellenistic period and for a few hundred years after its collapse, astrology and reincarnation was most certainly a well-respected viewpoint on the main stage of Christian theology. A number of well known early church leaders such as Clement of Alexandria, St. Gregory of Nyssa, Justin the Martyr, St. Jerome, Origen and even St. Augustine strongly adhered to the doctrine of reincarnation. The clue to the wide acceptance in the belief in reincarnation is something which modern historians are beginning to rethink but to understand why it fell out of favor we must first face an historical phantom. It has always been taught by Catholicism that they were the true followers of Christ and that Gnostics (Gk. γνώσις gnōsis, Knowledge) of the Hellenistic period were simply a heretical pseudo-group on its fringes which ran parallel to mainstream thought. Historians are now clearly beginning to realize that it was actual the reverse for the first five hundred years or so of Christianity. It was Catholicism which emerged out of Gnosticism centuries after Christ’s death and then turned its back on the Mysteries in order to establish a mundane Church. The term ‘Catholic’ is derived from the Greek adjective καθολικός, which means “universal.” Although it was used to designate an actual ‘faith’ as early as 107AD by Ignatius of Antioch it would not solidify into a mundane Church until February 27th 380AD. This is when, by an edict of Emperor Theodosius, Catholic Christianity was declared the official religion of the Roman Empire and he defined the term “Catholic” in Roman Imperial law as follows: - “It is our desire that all the various nations which are subject to our clemency and moderation, should continue the profession of that religion which was delivered to the Romans by the divine Apostle Peter, as it has been preserved by faithful tradition and which is now professed by the Pontiff Damasus and by Peter, Bishop of Alexandria, a man of apostolic holiness. According to the apostolic teaching and the doctrine of the Gospel, let us believe in the one Deity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in equal majesty and in a holy Trinity. We authorize the followers of this law to assume the title Catholic Christians; but as for the others, since in our judgment they are foolish madmen, we decree that they shall be branded with the ignominious name of heretics, and shall not presume to give their conventicles the name of churches. They will suffer in the first place the chastisement of divine condemnation and the second the punishment of our authority, in accordance with the will of heaven will decide to inflict.” (Theodosian Code XVI.i.2) ... The rest they say is history; the Catholic Church would spend hundreds of years solidifying an authoritarian stranglehold on everyone on the grounds that they and they alone should dispense the truth to the multitudes. To do such it became imperative that certain empowering beliefs had to be eradicated. Certain teachings like reincarnation and astrology contradicted the emerging political aspirations of the new Church and became a closed topic during the Second Council of Constantinople (also known as the Fifth Ecumenical Council) in 553AD. History has shown that this particular Council was filled with intrigue, plotting and solidification of mundane or earthly powers by certain Church officials like Emperor Justinian (1532-1565); ruler of the Byzantine ‘Eastern’ Church in Constantinople. It was during the Second Council that ‘men’ decided, not God; that certain views were no longer accepted. Ironically, just prior to the Second Council of Constantinople, Emperor Justinian had Pope Vigilius of the Western Church of Rome kidnapped and while in captivity, although he was allowed to attend the Council, he refused. He also openly proclaimed that Rome would not officially sanction nor ratify many of the Council’s decisions. Still, regardless of the Pope’s tenacity, many of Council’s views would inevitably slip into mainstream Christianity. This was because, after eight years of imprisonment, Emperor Justinian finally released Pope Vigilius but he died in route back to Rome in 555AD. Justinian’s personal candidate, Pelagius I, succeeded him which helped solidify Justinian’s rulings of the Fifth Ecumenical Council in both Eastern and Western Churches. ... Now, centuries later or in today’s society, it is easy to find Christians who practice or believe in astrology but rooted deep in their unconscious, regardless of a rebellious desire to study an occult art, is the inherited Christian belief that reincarnation doesn’t exist. Most adhere to the theory that after death we simply go to Heaven or Hell. Astrology for the most part has tragically been reduced to figuring out your life in the here now. Even those astrologers who believe in reincarnation rarely understand its full implications in our birth chart.

1:00pm Did you know that in English pubs ale is ordered by pints and quarts? This is why in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them "Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down." Which is where we get the phrase 'mind your P's and Q's' ... being a beer drinker, I found this amusing.

The Holy Books of Thelema is the collective name given to the group of inspired texts received by Aleister Crowley between the years 1904 and 1911.  These texts lie at the very heart of the teachings of his magical fraternity, the A.: A.:, and consequently have been the subject of intense study and commentary by Crowley himself, and also by many of his students. A Concordance to the Holy Books of Thelema is an important new tool for those engaged in the study of these beautiful and enigmatic books.  It comprises a survey of every word in these texts, along with a brief quotation to give the context in which each word is used, and the location in which it appears. On the most basic level A Concordance to the Holy Books of Thelema serves as a convenient reference guide or index to the contents of The Holy Books.  More importantly, it provides a level of access to the basic elements of the structure and composition of the texts that no conventional reading would afford.  Key words and their frequencies of use become apparent, broader usage patterns are revealed, and the identification of particular phraseologies and idioms is simplified.  The new paths of exploration that it opens for those with knowledge of the Kabbalah and Gematria are too numerous to list. The Concordance includes an Introduction by the compiler, Colin D. Campbell, a student and teacher of the Thelemic, Kabbalistic, and Enochian magickal systems, and a Foreword by Crowley biographer and scholar, Dr. Richard Kaczynski. ... Special Launch Issue. 5:15am For the history buffs: Arthur Edward Waite joined Arthur Machen’s Drinking Society on this date in 1902 which was called ‘Rabelaisian Order of Tosspots.’ He assumed the title of Master Basil. …….. and Thor Heyerdahl was born on this date in Larvik, Norway in 1914. He was a noted anthropologist and adventurer who gained world-wide press coverage in 1947 with his trip on the wooden raft named the Kon-Tiki in order to prove his theory that people from South America could have sailed to Polynesia. He died on April 18, 2002. ……… and finally, on October 6, 1966 all research on mescaline, LSD and psilocybin came to a halt when the FDA placed them all on a ‘Schedule 1’ drug classification. MDMA was placed on Schedule 1 in July of 1985. This is the same class as marijuana, heroin and cocaine. “Schedule 1 is supposed to be reserved for drugs that have no medical use, are addictive and destructive to human tissue, and cause social destruction, diseases and accidents.”

Sunday October 5th 2008 – 8:40am In case anyone is interested - Jim Esheleman's The Mystical & Magical System of the A.'.A.'. The Spiritual System of Aleister Crowley & George Cecil Jones is back in print. If you don't have a copy, grab it now!  It's going for just $49.00.

8:25am I received this email - "Mr.Cornelius 93 I saw the picture of the 'toast' on your blog. It was a miracle! I am no longer blind! Praise Crowley! I'm even growing a penis! 93 93-93 Kathleen." .... Reply: ??????? Wow! What can I say?  [see October 2nd 5:15pm listing]

6:00am For the history buffs: Guido von List was born on this date in 1848. He was a noted Austrian esotericist who founder Ariosophy. At the age of fourteen built a temple to the god Wotan complete with altar in the crypt of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. It was his writings on the divine nature of the Germanic race, along with Lanz von Liebenfels, whom Adolf Hitler read avidly in the journal titled Ostara. List also published the book titled The Secret of the Runes. He died on May 17, 1919. …...… and on October 5, 1930 the British airship known as the R 101 crashed in flames on a hillside in Beauvais, France killing 48 of its 54 passengers. What makes this story unique is that two days afterwards an anxious voice of a man claiming to be Flight Lieutenant H. Carmichael Irwin spoke through the lips of the medium Eileen Garrett while she sat in a trance during a séance at the National Laboratory of Psychical Research in London, which had been set up four years earlier by Harry Price, a well-known psychic investigator. The Captain spoke in short disjointed sentences as he described in-depth the horrifying last moments before his incineration. Because of the worldwide interest in the crash, the séance also attracted worldwide attention and this was also due to a reporter, present at the séance, who put the news story out at once. What made the story even more amazing is that the ‘spirit’ included a wealth of technical information that was confirmed six months later by an official lnquiry. …..…. And Anthony R. Naylor was born on this date in 1949. He had no prior involvement with Magic(k) or the Occult until given Crowley’s Thoth Tarot deck in 1987. Having researched the deck he began collecting Crowley first editions.  In 1989 he founded Mandrake Press Ltd. as an excuse to buy desktop publishing software. The first book he published was Aleister Crowley’s The Forbidden Lecture (1990) - many more Crowley titles followed including a facsimile of The Equinox (1992), O.T.O. Rituals and Sex Magick together with numerous volumes of Crowley's poetry. Has also published books by or about the artist Austin O. Spare and is responsible as author, editor and compiler of the classic series entitled From the Inferno To Zos (1993/95 …….. and finally, on October 5, 1952 Clive Barker was born in Liverpool, England. He is a leading author of contemporary horror. His distinctive style is characterized by the notion of hidden fantastical worlds existing side by side with our own. About him, the popular author Stephen King once said, “I have seen the future of horror and its name is Clive Barker.” His Books of Blood (1984-1985), which are a series of short stories, are classics. In these appear such noted stories as Hellraiser and Rawhead Rex. Other books of note are The Hellbound Heart (1986) and Cabal (1985), the latter which was released as a movie retitled Nightbreed.

Saturday October 4th 2008 – 7:50am My ex-girl friend, a cute little Scorpio and co-founder of the old Brocken Mt. Lodge OTO in Connecticut back in the late 1970s, Roberta 'Bert' DiFronzo saw the 'toast' and writes - "This really made my night. Only you would find something like this." .... Reply: In truth, a Thelemic Angel descended upon me and whispered in my ear, with a thick British accent - "Check Ebay!"

7:35am For the history buffs : On this date in 1967, shortly after 11:00pm, ‘something’ crashed into the bay by the tiny fishing village of Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia. It was described as being about 60 feet long with 4 lights that flashed in sequence. After it hovered for a few minutes, it descended at a 45 degree angle and, upon impact with the water; there was a bright flash and an explosive roar. The crash was viewed by at least 20 witnesses who said that just before sinking, it looked like it was flat dome shaped. The crash was originally phoned into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Detachment in Barrington Passage, Nova Scotia by a young fisherman, describing it as a possible ‘airliner’ impacting the surface of the waters adjacent to Shag Harbour. Canadian Navy and RCMP divers were brought in on the morning of October 6 to recover the wreckage but all attempts were unsuccessful. Nothing was ever found. Today, many believe that it was a UFO that crashed into Shag harbor. ….....…. And it was on October 4, 2363 that the day the USS Enterprise, NCC 1701-D, was officially commissioned and launched.

Friday October 3rd 2008 – 12:20pm I just replied to a student - "Ah, the psychic thing. I use to know an old lady named Beverly back in the early seventies. At the time she was in her mid fifties, shoulder length grayish brown hair, slightly bent over and she smoked cigarettes one after another. She reminded me of a little old witch-type spinster who lives alone in a dark musty old house in need of a paint job, with an over grown lawn and with weeds everywhere. I was surprised to discover that this image I had of her house was not entirely off. When I first visited her house the only thing I had missed in my original description was the broken fence in the front yard and the gigantic dead tree on the side of her house, which should have been cut down ages ago. Other than that she lived near the shoreline in Connecticut in the very house I described. There were no houses, or neighbors, on either side of her, just behind. The impressive thing I thought at the time was the number of cats she had running around the place. Even she didn’t know how many were coming and going, but she would spend hours feeding any who came in through the open kitty door. I enjoyed talking with her and felt that I learned quite a bit from her about psychic and witchcraft things. I also give her the honor of being the person who got me hooked on coffee. Ironically, something I had avoided for years hanging around coffee houses in New Haven. Anyway, she started me on the practice of trying to ‘second guess’ everything from the most trivial of events to the important and then writing my attempt down. Not necessarily in detail but simply in a column listing ‘yes & no’ where I could put a check mark. She suggested with time that if I started ‘hitting’ on things more than not, before they happened, then I should now begin writing down a paragraph in detail, not so much in depth about what I hit upon but how I felt about it which might explain my ‘mood’ or ‘frame of mind’ so that I could inevitably identify it and then put myself into that head space when needed. I still do to this practice to this day and I’m surprised how more often than not I can ‘see’ things about people. I make jokes about this and I call it my ‘Bull-Shit Meter’ because it gives me great first impressions and warns me of impending problems. … Anyway, the thing is, everyone is psychic but everyone wants to make the ‘big, important prediction’ … but I was taught, those who look for the ‘big prediction’ are simply looking for recognition of their ego, those who look toward simplicity, are understanding Self. "

9:30am Yes Frank, the times are correct for the earlier postings. I got up in the middle of night, wide awake and decided to be productive.

1:30am Luna writes, after seeing the toast - "We've got the eggs and sausage to go with the Sale! Send 'em on down for a bargain basement toastie oaties Sale of the Century!....and the bacon too!

1:18am Carol writes briefly, after seeing the toast - "93s Chomp ... doesn't taste like Crowley ... "  [edit the rest  :)-]

1:15am Keith Richmond writes - "Loved the toast."

1:10am Mick Roche writes, after seeing the toast - "93! "Mr. Anderson what you hear is the sound of inevitability."  LOL !  That's hilarious. If he didn't do it, someone else would have! No doubt, the capacity for self-parody is a noble Thelemic ideal. MIck. 93 93/93."

1:05am Ed Wormuth writes, after seeing the toast - "93-didn't this come up in conversation after one of your Saturday affairs??  Great stuff!! 93---Ed."

1:00am For the history buffs: Hippolyte Leon Denizard Rivail was born on this date in Lyon, France in 1804. He was more commonly known by the pseudonym of Allan Kardec. Many consider him to be the father of the modern doctrine of ‘Spiritism’, also called ‘Kardecism.’ In his fifties he became interested in the wildly popular phenomenon of spirit-rapping and began research the topic. He is best known for his classic, Le Livre des Esprits (The Spirits’ Book), which was first published in 1856. Within this book he expounded a new theory of human life and destiny which he based on trance communications. In fact, his pseudonym originated from mediumistic communications. Both the names Allan and Kardec were said to have been his names in two previous incarnations. He wrote such other books as  The Gospel as Explained by Spirits (1864); Heaven and Hell (1865) and Genesis (1867). He died on March 31, 1869. ……. And Annie Elizabeth Fredericka Horniman was born on this date in Forest Hill in Lewisham in 1860, the daughter of a wealthy family. In the late 1880s she pursued her enduring interests in the occult by becoming deeply involved in The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which was a secret occult society founded by Samuel Liddell Mathers in 1888. It was in this fraternity that Horniman first made the acquaintance of the Irish poet, W. B. Yeats and the actress, Florence Farr. She was known as Soror Fortiter Et Recte. She was deeply involved in the Order and was once the official ‘scribe’ whom some claimed should never have gotten the position because “it was almost certainly a mistake. It seems Mrs. Horniman was obviously a difficult person to get on with as shown by her irreverently bestowed nickname - “Pussy.” She remained a member of the Order until 1903. She died in her sleep at Shere in Surrey on August 6, 1937 …...…. And finally, to continue with birthdays:  Paul Foster Case was born in Fairport, New York on this date in 1884. His mother was a teacher and his father was the head librarian. Case was initiated into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn on May 16, 1920, while visiting the Praemonstrator Michael Whitty. He took the magical motto of ‘Perseverantia’ at the Thoth-Hermes Temple of the Golden Dawn (Alpha et Omega) in New York. He later went on to establish the Los Angeles occult school known as the Builders of the Adytum (B.O.T.A.). He died on March 2, 1954 while vacationing in Mexico with his second wife Harriet.

1:30pm Paul Hohlt writes, "I was curious if there are gaps in Crowley's diaries that would account for the time it would have taken him to compose the Holy Books since they were not automatic writings as he'd stated. They represent a pinnacle of his poetic output so I'd assume much time and thought were put into them, I was just wondering what your take is." .... Reply: Actually his diaries spanning the time when he wrote the Holy Books do survive; although they are sparse. They reveal little.

1:00pm Weiser Antiquarian Books is pleased to announce the release of their forty-fifth on-line catalog. This catalog comprises a significant collection of manuscript materials, printed works, and a typescript, relating to John Whiteside ("Jack") Parsons.  Click HERE to view it.

9:45am Every now and then I have a student who writes something which makes me sit up and smile. After reading one of our four recommended books, Hillman's The Soul Code, one student wrote - " ... Hillman makes me want to dance naked in the kitchen while rubbing Crisco all over my whole body…that’s how excited this book made me. It honestly had to be one of the sexiest books I’ve ever read.” ..... Reply: Interesting? Crisco was the first shortening to be made entirely of vegetable oil, it is said to be extremely healthy for you and, since I don't eat veggies, perhaps I should try smearing it all over my body to see if this might work?  Anybody have any good recipes out there?

6:25am I was sent some 'Near Death Experiences' as seen through the eyes of astrological signs. I thought I should share them ...

ARIES: "Who's in charge here? I'd like to see God right now, please. Am I dead? Gee, I never thought that could happen to me! Where can I get a crystal palace backlit with white light like that one?"

TAURUS: Leaving the body, Taurus realizes that he or she no longer has a stomach and immediately returns to the body (thud!), without seeing tunnels, light, God, etc., making Taurus skeptical for the rest of his or her life.

GEMINI: The key thing to the zodiacal twins isn't the experience itself, but how they can embellish it when telling the story (or writing about it). Since Geminis are comfortable in all worlds, except those without telephones, they usually bounce back to the body fairly rapidly-- and the mouth tends to work before the rest of the body comes back to life.

CANCER: Cancerians can live to be 125 years old, and they don't usually have near death experiences, but they can come awfully close to having a near life experience when they get brave and venture out of their house for "supplies."

LEO: "Nooooooo, I am NOT dead. I am not, I am not, I am not . . . Who are those guys in the white robes? What's that they're singing . . . ? They're off key. I can sing better than that! Where's the choir director? I need a microphone immediately. Unless it's Rolling Stone or Spin, hold my calls."

VIRGO: Working a marathon 60 hours straight, Virgo collapses and leaves the body. She moves through that delightfully clean and sparkling tunnel of light, occasionally reflecting upon possible improvements . . . but soon becomes so worried by the thought of her loved ones "managing" without her that she snaps back into the body like white lightning, sits up, and calmly pronounces herself alive, glancing at her watch.

LIBRA: Floating out of the body, then in, then out, then in, and finally out again . . . Libra sees a tunnel and a vibrant being of light at the other end. "Wow, is that Jesus? Wait a minute, maybe it's Kwan Yin. That looks like something she'd wear." Never deciding whether to go through the tunnel (after all, what's death without someone to share it with?) Libra ends up back in the body by default, hounded by a mysterious compulsion to start a dating service for discarnate souls.

SCORPIO: Since most Scorpio's have nine lives, they tend to brainstorm different ways to trigger the near death experience. Once nearly dead, most can barely get to the end of the tunnel without meeting some being with whom they have astral sex. When asked whom they prefer to greet them on the other side, 75% name a favorite vampire, and Medusa is a strong contender.

SAGITTARIUS: Sag floats out of her body and has to laugh at the stupid way she bought the farm. After somehow BREAKING the tunnel of light, she absolutely refuses to return to the body, since she's been trying to get out of it for all these years (via clumsy accidents). Because Sag is immensely curious about whether the so-called organized religious have any validity at all, this stroke of luck leads to some amaaaaaazing lessons, until, alas, the astral folks tire of her and trick her into returning to Earth for the duration.

CAPRICORN: It might take Capricorn a little while to realize he's dead because there are special rooms set up to look like executive offices for newly-dead Goats. A sharp-looking, older gentleman-ghost comes in and gives Cap an instruction manual titled HOW TO PROFIT IN THE ASTRAL MARKETPLACE, plus a "job evaluation" type assessment of Cap's achievements and mistakes over the lifetime, followed by a pink slip (meaning the body revived). Caps tend to return to their bodies quickly, unable to tolerate non-physical existence for long.

AQUARIUS: Aquarius gets to the pearly gates, sees that heaven isn't run by consensus, and opts for hell, where at least there is an appealing anarchy and rules are made to be broken. Ironically, Aquarian near-death experiences tend to be extremely traditional, i.e., God the Father, St. Peter, the celestial choir and so on (another reason to rebel and opt for hell). Once in the underworld, they bedevil the hell out of Satan and his cronies with their loud and vigorous campaigns for progressive reforms, and are quickly expelled back to the body.

PISCES: For some reason, our Piscean friends barely notice their near death experiences. Instead, during a typical day at the office, many Pisceans report seeing beings with long-suffering expressions on their faces and who patiently tell the Piscean to go back to his or her body.

5:50am Luna writes:

Jack 93!
Happy Birthday:
"...And be forever Falling
Around the edge of the world."

exerpt from Grady's poem "A Fall of Angels"
93s  )O(

5:20am I received the latest issue of Another Mirror at the end of the Road [see blog entry 9/30 10:15am]; it came late yesterday. What can I saw but wow. Nice job guys. This is a must get magazine ... I'll have a few extra copies to hand out at our Friday night gathering, first come, first get ...

5:15am I should also mention that by 1670 AD the concept of a personal Holy Guardian Angel was so widely accepted by the populace that Pope Clement X actually fixed a specific day when everyone was to pay respect to his or her Angel. He proclaimed this day, October 2nd, the “Feast Day of the Guardian Angels.” A Feast which is still observed to this day amongst some Catholic circles. Early extracts from Catholic liturgies make it clear that the substantial idea underlying this feast was to acknowledge the three-fold office of the Holy Guardian Angel; which was to praise God, to act as His messenger, and to watch over all mankind. However, if you believe in these theories, that God has given you a Holy Guardian Angel to help guide you, and there is no reason to doubt this assumption, then logic dictates that there must be a method whereby you can commune with your own Angel. It is a very simple and reasonable supposition which has lead humanity questing for such results since the dawn of recorded history. ... I'll probably be going to Blake's [which is a bar] tonight for a few drink, supper etc & etc ... to let my angel know I'm still thinking of her.

5:00am There is alot to report today for the history buffs: Arthur Edward Waite was born on this date in 1857. He was an English Christian mystic, writer on Masonic and occult subjects and a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. He established the order known as The Fellowship of the Rosy Cross which Aleister Crowley once wrote; “...has substituted a pompous, turgid rigmarole of bombastic platitudes for the neophyte ritual, so that the last spark of interest is extinct for ever.” Ada Waite, his wife, died on September 18, 1924. She always remained a curious nebulous figure throughout his life. It has been written that there is “...no assignable limit to her capacity for sleeping and when awake she was such ‘unassailable taciturnity” that “she never spoke willingly, and seldom answered anyone except upon extreme pressure, this silence became itself a kind of eloquence.” Waite died on May 19, 1943. …..…. And on October 2, 1890 Julius ‘Groucho’ Marx was born in New York City. He was part of one of the world’s most famous comedy teams; the others two members being his brothers Chico and Harpo. Many of his one-liners are still being quoted to this day, like: “Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes?”, “I never forget a face, but in your case I’ll be glad to make an exception.” Or, “A man’s only as old as the woman he feels.” …...….. and to continue on with the birthday theme; on October 2, 1914 John ‘Jack’ Marvel Whiteside Parsons was born in Pasadena, California. He was a writer, visionary, dedicated occultist, rocket scientist and chemist. He helped create the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, now a major industrial complex. His rocket experiments were often conducted behind the Devil’s Gate Dam in Pasadena, near the present day Jet-Propulsion Laboratory. He worked with such great minds in rocketry as Eric Von Karmen, Frank Malina, Jack Williamson and Edward S. Forman. In fact, Parsons’ ideas regarding solid-propellant rocket fuel would aid the first American rocket-assisted takeoff on August 12th in 1941. His exploits in rocketry are so famous that it gained him the honor of having a crater on the Moon named after him, appropriately enough on the dark side. On February 15, 1941 at 7:45pm, Jack Parsons and his wife, Helen, joined Aleister Crowley’s O.T.O. taking both Minerval and First Degree Initiation on the same evening. Jack would later take Probationer in the AA under Wilfred T. Smith on March 22nd; taking the magickal motto of ‘Thelema Obtentum Procedero Amoris Nuptiae’, which Crowley later commented was “couched in a language beyond my powers of understanding.” Parsons later assumed Lodge Master of Agape Lodge after Wilfred T. Smith resigned. In time Parsons would also become known by such names as Frater Belarion, Frater 210 or the self-proclaimed ‘Antichrist.’ He died on June 17, 1952. He and his wife, Marjorie Elizabeth Cameron, had their trailer already packed and were ready to move to Mexico for a time but this date would end their plans. Jack accidentally dropped a can of mercury fulminate in his ground floor laboratory. His lab was an old four-car garage apartment that had once been the stable of the estate located at 1071 South Orange Grove Avenue, which had once been Agape Lodge. The first people to arrive after the blast found the huge stable doors blown off their hinges, two walls gone, windows shattered and a gaping hole torn through the ceiling timbers revealing the second floor apartment. They found Jack Parsons underneath a massive double-tub laundry fixture that had landed on top of him along with a section of the wall. All the newspapers at the time reported that he was actually conscious even though he was badly burned and mangled. In fact, Jane Wolfe would later tell Grady McMurtry that Jack “was in so deep a case of shock that he gave instructions regarding the removal of a bath tub which had landed on his back. Yet getting to the hospital [Huntington Memorial Hospital] he became inarticulate, lapsed into unconsciousness” and he died shortly thereafter. One newspaper wrote that, “The explosion blew off his right forearm, tore a gaping hole in his jaw and shattered the other arm and both legs.” Jane also told Grady, “Jack was badly mutilated; no one was permitted to see the body.” He was later cremated on July 19th. Jane wrote, “There was no service for Jack; Candy [i.e. Cameron] and two young men, in silence held a lighted-candle vigil.” Jack’s obituary referred to the service simply as - “secret rites.” ……...… and finally, on October 2, 1917 Rosaleen Norton was born in Dunedin, New Zealand. She claimed to have experienced various forms of psychic apparitions throughout her life and considered them part of the natural order of the universe. She started drawing at aged 3, but was expelled from Chatswood Girls Grammar School after disrupting her classmates by drawing bizarre pictures of supernatural phenomena. She studied art at East Sydney Technical College, where her vivid imagination was encouraged, and she started exploring ritual and the occult, later experimenting with hypnotic trance states. In 1952 she released The Art Of Rosaleen Norton, with poems by Gavin Greenlees but it became heralded as indecent by the newspapers of the day and, as time went by, rumors began to spread about Black Masses and Rosaleen’s devil cult. She became known as the “Witch of Kings Cross.” She supported herself by selling her paintings and making charms and hexes for a chosen few. She spent her last years with her cats, music and books, and she died of colon cancer on December 5, 1979.

Wednesday October 1st 2008 – 9:00pm Here is a generic email that I sent out to friends - "93 Years ago, right after the death of our beloved Frater Hymenaeus Alpha 777 people assumed authority over the estate of Aleister Crowley who outright had animosity for Grady Louis McMurtry. We saw years of outright lies, fabrications and distortions being vomited about Grady and it wasn’t until nine years after his death with the publication of Red Flame No.1 The Poetry of Grady Louis McMurtry (1994) which had a lengthy bio on the man titled The Warrior Troubadour that many of the rumors were put to rest and people started asking question about what they had heard and the truth. Then, about nine years later, with the publication of In The Name of The Beast (2005) the true story of Grady McMurtry emerged and people saw the worth behind our inspiration. That was our plan. Now, a few years have passed and we feel it is time to start giving as much possible to the world regarding what Grady wrote so that others might share what inspired us. I have and typeset and uploaded all his poems as well as numerous stories. But now health issues are holding me back from doing more and although I plan to continue my effort; I’m slowing down. I cannot thank you enough for volunteering to assist by typesetting into Word some of Grady’s stuff. It’s a noble venture and one which I hope our AA lineage can consider a great legacy to humanity. 93 93/93 Jerry."

6:00pm Andy West of Sacramento, after reading A Serious Qabalistic Study of 666 writes, "Jerry 93, Well, in lieu of a serious answer, at least I can play along." He then adds - "2/3=0.66666 The Fraction of the Beast."  ...... previously Andy had asked a question regarding his study on the number 666. But I've just been too brain dead and tired to focus upon it to give any serious answer. - Sorry. - I might like to quote a wise man who said - "... you have to figure out the numbers that symbolize your Universe. I think gematria is a great thing at the beginning, since numbers can hold BIG ideas in a small, easy to remember format that can work on us unconsciously." ... I agree with him and I might add seek out the books View over Atlantis and The City of Revelation both by John Michell for good info on 666.

12:30pm On Monday I posted the following on my blog at 3:45pm - "Jerri is sending me "Astral hugs and kisses and brocolli" ... she also added "... can't I send you veggies in the astral plane at least???" ... I replied, "Aughhhhhhhh!!!! The pain, the pain! I'm melting, feeling healthy, "What a world, what a world."  ... and this morning I decided to be nice and I sent her an email - "Thanks for the 'astral' broccoli, it was the best damn astral broccoli that I ever tasted! But next time, send some cheese sauce with it and a big glass of milk and preferably let it be delivered and served by a naked woman wearing just a little maid's apron." ... Jerri just now sent me an email; she writes, "93 Jerry, I love it ... that's the beauty of men. I mention brocolli and you STILL find a way to bring the conversation back around to your penis! It's a beautiful thing. A maid outfit, huh? That one put a HUGE smile on my face!! ... astral hugs from naked ladies! 93 93/93 Jerri." ........ Reply:  Hummmm, I'm confused ... is it my penis or the maid's outfit to which you refer as the 'beautiful thing' ????

10:40am I just posted in the archive section scans of Grady McMurtry's LAST WILL & TESTAMENT.

7:10am In a reply to an email - "Toward the end of Chapter Fifteen in my my biography on Grady McMuryry titled IN THE NAME OF THE BEAST, I discuss Grady’s views on his magickal universe and how he came to believe that his cycle of poetry known as The Angel and the Abyss, A Cycle of 22 Poems in honor of Our Maid of the Star Drifts” represented his Magickal Thesis. Grady believed that each of the 22 poems symbolized one particular major Arcanum in Aleister Crowley’s Thoth deck but he did not put pen to paper in the traditional order of the Fool being first, followed by the Magus and so forth. Grady let his Holy Guardian Angel guide him as to which card or poem was to be first, second and so forth. Shortly after completing this particular cycle of poems Grady then claimed, “I decided to come down thru the Sepheroth from Kether to Malkuth, including Daath ... The entire cycle I called Dark Space And Bright Stars, A cycle of 11 poems celebrating the Mysteries of the Virgin Goddess.” ... To some the order of his poems may appear randomly produced. However, they are not. Just before the end of his life Grady interpreted each card as representing a period in his life. This is why both volumes of Grady’s bio have only thirty-two chapters. It’s his universe, his Tree of Life; his life in general. The first chapter is titled The Star which was the first poem that manifested in the cycle. Underneath this title are a few appropriate verses from that poem. All the chapters in Grady McMurtry’s biography follow the manifestation of his universe as depicted poem by poem from The Angel and the Abyss and Dark Space And Bright Star cycle. It is highly recommended that you contemplate the excerpts from each poem before and after reading a chapter. It is no secret that to understand Grady’s magick is to understand his poetry."

6:15am Robert Flores writes - "... remember my prediction that McCain would win election then die in office so that Palin would be in office during 2012, our first female president. Well here is an interesting little tid bit. Sarah in Hebrew is spelled shin-resh-he=505 and Palin=Peh-Aleph-Lamed-Nun= 161 the whole thing is 666 ....funny?" ...... Reply: Funny in a scary kinda way.  Are you saying a woman is the Anti-Christ?

6:00am For the history buffs: Aleister Crowley recorded on this date in 1901 that he obtained his first Dhyana and adds that it “had washed my brain completely out.” Dhyana refers to a meditative state where an individual surrenders to the emptiness of space and experiences egolessness, whereby he transcends the awareness of time. In Crowley’s Book IV, Part I, he tried to define what Dhyana by writing, “Let us try a final definition. Dhyana resembles Samadhi in many respects. There is a union of the ego and the non-ego, and a loss of the sense of time and space and causality. Duality in any form is abolished. The idea of time involves that of two consecutive things, that of space two non-coincident things, that of causality two connected things.” ……… Philip Emmons Isaac Bonewits was born in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1949. His parents were devout Roman Catholics, from whom he acquired an appreciation for religion. On June 16, 1970 he graduated from The University at Berkeley at a time when the Berkeley’s individual ‘group-study program’ allowed people to create their own degree course. He was the first and last person ever to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Magic and Thaumaturgy. Sadly, the publicity about Bonewits’ degree so embarrassed the University administrators that ‘Magic, Witchcraft and Sorcery’ has been banned from the individual group-study programs ever since. Bonewits is the author of the book titled Real Magic which was released in 1971. In the same year at the annual ‘Aleister Crowley Birthday Party’ in Berkeley, California, Grady Louis McMurtry the head of the Ordo Templi Orientis met Bonewits. Grady would later remark, “Stupid me, I thought he was Jewish, name, appearance, etc., but trust that clever Phyllis [i.e. his wife]. She just right out asked him if he wasn’t a Catholic, and he said, well, yes, in a way.” The author Israel Regardie would later joke to Grady in a letter that he too, had made the same mistake about ‘Bonewitz’ by calling him “a smart-aleck Jew” with “a fat ego,” admitting the Jewish part, of course, was wrong. ……… and on October 1, 1968 the cult classic Night of The Living Dead, a low budget, black and white movie, opened in theaters. The plot is painfully simple. A satellite falls from space and upon crashing it unleashes radiation which causes the recently deceased to rise from the grave, very hungry and in quest of the living for food. This entire movies centers around a group of people barricaded in an old farmhouse who are fighting for their life. Outside are hordes of relentless, utterly grotesque rotting zombies who can only be killed by a blow to the head.
