~ October 1st - 17th 2009 ~

Saturday October 17th 2009 – 8:05am It was on October 17th 1989, twenty years ago today, that after attending a Court Hearing due to the earlier Police raid on the OTO, myself and others went out to the Starry Plough [bar] for pitchers of beer. Hours later, just a little after 5:00pm, I left the bar to head home. Admittedly I was feeling no pain. We had driven less than a few blocks and were at the corner of Alcatraz and Shattuck when an earthquake hit! It was a big one, a real fucking big one, one of the worst to hit California in years. The road went up and down like a roller coaster and I watched as the telephone poles and wires violently swayed like sticks in beach sand on a heavy windy day. Everywhere you looked people were running out of the buildings screaming. The quake didn’t last long but the damage done to the Bay Area was remarkable. Hundreds of homes were lost, parts of the highway collapsed and fires dotted the sky. It would become known as the Loma Prieta Earthquake and it was of a magnitude 7.1 on the Richter scale. Sixty-two people died and aftershocks would hit the Bay Area for weeks.
I came to California in late August of 1989 and within two months I was arrested in one of the largest Police raids on the OTO and I experience a major earthquake. Some people said that it was all an omen for me to run back to Connecticut, others, like myself, simply smiled and asked "What next?" as I screamed at the Gods - "Bring it on!"  ....... and then I got married.  :(

Our hero wants to be a pop star and answers an ad to be front man for a band. Unfortunately it is as the lead singer, Krauser, of the notorious death metal band DMC: Detroit Metal City. After much hijinks and identity confusion DMC must ultimately go up against to Godfather of death metal, Jack played by Gene Simmons. DMC make Celtic Frost look like Hansen. Highlights are the manager of DMC and the drummer's "Bloomers". If you liked Wild Zero you'll like this one too. Here's a link : http://www.mysoju.com/detroit-metal-city/ , Love, paul."

7:45am For the history buffs: Edward Crowley, father of the Great Beast 666, was born on this date in 1834. ……..... And Hereward Hubert Lavington Carrington was born on this date in St Saviour, Jersey, in the Channel Islands off the coast of Great Britain in 1880. He attended college in London, and after receiving his Ph.D. he immigrated to America, settling in New York. However, a lifelong interest in parapsychology brought Carrington into contact with the American Society for Psychical Research, and he soon became an investigator for it, an unpaid post which he underwrote by authoring hundreds of articles and books on the paranormal. He would devote the rest of a very long life to investigating reports of telepathy, astral projection, reincarnation, mediumship, ghosts, and other paranormal phenomenon. He author such books as True Ghost Stories, The Psychic World, Telepathy and Clairvoyance, The Phenomena of Astral Projection, The Case for Psychic Survival, Haunted People, Modern Psychical Phenomena, The Invisible World, and Psychic Oddities. He also published a small pamphlet titled Strange People I Have Known. It was partially subtitled ‘Aleister Crowley - Poet, Eccentric, Erotologist, Mystic, Exotic Artist and Fabulous Character.’ In the chapter on Crowley he writes, “It was soon after World War I started that I received a visit from the most remarkable man I have ever known.” He mentions many things, like being the person who introduced Leah Hirsig to Crowley and to seeing Crowley off as he sailed back to England in 1920. At the time, Carrington expressing his regret to Crowley that he had not made a bigger impression while in America, to which Crowley replied, “Well, what can you expect of a country that accepts Ella Wheeler Wilcox as its greatest Poet!” ………. And finally, on this date in 1958 the Humbolt Times in California printed a photo of a man named holding a cast of footprint belonging to a huge, gigantic unknown creature. It looked human. It was found by a logging road tractor operator in the Six Rivers National Forest. The enormous manlike tracks matched the general description of tracks found in other remote areas -- tracks that local Native American tribes attributed to the legendary, shy, hairy giants that were occasionally seen and heard in the steep, misty mountain rainforests of the region. The press dubbed the animal "Bigfoot" and on this day, the name stuck and legends were born!

Friday October 16th 2009 – TONIGHT'S OPEN HOUSE ... Well folks, tonight at Love's Sake Clerk House we are going to try to show the classic Japanese B-movie called MACHINE GIRL (2008) that we had to cancel last week due to the flu. This movie gleefully if not unashamedly films in graphic detail every bloody dismemberment, decapitation, necrophilia, yakuza ninjas, chainsaw killings, sword wielding, bullet riddled and spinning killer ‘drill bra’ moment. The film starts with gore-splattering sequence in which an innocent-looking Japanese high school girl name Ami Hyūga is killing a gang of bullies. If you enjoyed how the movie Tokyo Gore Police had enough excessive blood spray to fill a lake then you’ll love this movie because it’s in the same vein, no pun intended. Anyway, if this day has offered you little or no focus and you feel that you’ve misplaced your brain, then this movie will be appreciated. Just sit back, smile, watch and just don’t take anything seriously. It's that kind of movie. It is a classic. If you want to read my full review of the movie, click HERE and go to the very bottom of the page.   Time: 6:30pmish .... Bring popcorn &  beer.

8:00am  For the history buffs: Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde was born on this date in Dublin, Ireland in 1854. Wilde was known for his flamboyance and wit, but he was rejected by many for his unorthodox views and bohemian lifestyle. He wrote stories, essays, plays, poems and novels, like: The Picture of Dorian Gray. At one time Aleister Crowley inscribed and annotated a two volume ‘proof’ edition of Frank Harris’ book titled Oscar Wilde, His Life and Confessions for the author. In one place Crowley provides the name of a person whom Harris alludes to who had laid a tribute to Oscar Wilde at his grave. It was by someone who supported Wilde during his imprisonment and exile and it seems Harris claims that this person wished to be known only as “C.B.” Crowley handwrites in the name ‘Chris Pollitt.’ This gentleman, or H. C. J. Pollitt (1871-1942), became involved with Aleister Crowley while both were attending Trinity College, Cambridge in 1897. At first their friendship was in the pursuit of ‘Black Magic,’ but Crowley also acknowledges that this was his first homosexual experience. In fact, when Crowley released his most noted homosexual tome titled The Scented Garden of Abdullah the Satirist of Shiraz, he included a poem titled The Riddle; if you take the first letter of each couplet going down it spells out ‘Herbert Charles Jerome Pollitt.’ He died on November 30, 1900 of cerebral meningitis on this date. His last words, as he lay dying in a drab Paris bedroom, were: “Either that wallpaper goes, or I do.” …....….. but equally important is that on October 16, 1869 on a farm in Cardiff, New York a 10 foot, 4 1/2-inch tall, 2,990-pound “petrified man” was discovered in the ground which touched off what was one of the greatest hoaxes in America. The origins of the hoax started in the spring of 1866 when George Hull of Binghamton, N.Y., was in Ackley visiting his sister. There was a tent show revival, and the preacher quoted text from the Bible, Genesis 6:4: “There were giants in the earth in those days.” Inspired, in the summer of 1868, Hull acquired a five ton slab of gypsum and hired a few sculptors, swore them to secrecy, and had them carve the block of gypsum into a shape of a reclining giant, holding his stomach as if he was in great pain. Sulfuric acid was used to ‘age’ the giant, and needles were used to simulate skin pores in order to make the giant as realistic as possible. The giant was then put in a box and shipped to Union, New York where Hull and his cousin, William Newell retrieved it. Newell lived just outside of Cardiff. The plan was to bury the giant on Newell’s farm and to leave it there for about a year. Ironically, the following spring, a farmer less than a mile from Newell just happened to discover by accident real bones that scientists from Cornell University pronounced to be fossils. The incident helped pave the way for the discovery of the giant several months later. This occurred on October 16, 1869 when Newell hired well drillers to dig a new well. Using a dowsing rod, or two-pronged stick used to find subsurface water, Newell led the drillers to the very spot where ‘water’ would be found but instead of discovering water, they unearthed the giant. Within a short span of time, trainloads of people from New York City were coming to see the giant, a tent was set up and $1 admission per person was charged. The showman Phineas T. Barnum tried to buy the giant, but Hull turned him down. Miraculously Barnum then found his own giant and by the time the Cardiff giant was taken on the road to New York, Barnum was already billing his as the ‘original.’ Ironically, everyone believed P.T. Barnum. Hannum was quoted in a newspaper as saying, “There’s a sucker born every minute,” a saying often mistakeningly attributed to P. T. Barnum. Needless to say Barnum and Hannum ended up in Court fighting over whose ‘giant’ was the real one and this is when George Hull stepped forward and confessed that the ‘Cardiff Giant’ was a hoax. The lawsuit was dismissed because the Judge ruled that Barnum could not be sued for having a fake Cardiff Giant because the original was a fake as well. …....….. And on October 16, 1942 Aleister Crowley mentions in his diaries that he had recorded his classic poem, The Hymn to Pan, on a phonograph but it has, to many people’s regret, never been found.

Thursday October 15th 2009 – 11:20am I received this email from the author of Infinite Variety, The Life and Legend of the Marchesa Casati (2000). Casati (1881-1957) was considered one of Europe’s most beautiful and notorious female celebrities; truly a counterpart of eccentricity to rival the likes of even the Great Beast himself. In fact, they knew each other. I highly recommend her biography. ... The author writes:

Hey, Jerry!
Hope you are well. It has been a while! Please note this new e-mail address. Speaking of new, our new Casati book is just out and doing well:
http://www.marchesacasati.com/portraitsofamuse.html
Recently, a friend noted that she believed that the Marchesa makes an appearance in Crowley's 'Diary of a Drug Fiend'. We are not familiar with the book and so are asking your learned opinion about this. Does some form of eccentric noblewoman appear in it? The little bit of research we were able to conduct on it shows that the book was published in 1922. And it was in 1920 that La Casati spent her first summer on Capri, during which time she toyed with visiting Thelema...
And thoughts would be appreciated!
Wishing you continued contentment and wonder.
Sincerely yours,
Scot & Michael

Reply: I am pretty familiar with story of The Diary of a Drug Fiend. I don't believe that any specific character in the book resembles Casati. Most characters, like those found in Moonchild, are based upon real people but I have no recollection of Casati mentioned as being one. Maybe one of my readers might have further info on who the characters in DDF really are? I do not have the paperwork or listing at my finger tips.

7:30am For the history buffs: Frederich Nietzsche was born on this date in 1844 in Rocken, a small village in Prussian Saxony. His concept of the ‘Superman’ inspired Adolf Hitler which probably made his “blasphemous spirit choke with glee”, or so it has been written. In his 1889 classic, titled The Twilight of the Gods, Nietzsche asked the great confrontational question: “Which is it, is man one of God’s blunders, or is God one of man’s blunders?” Nietzsche’s atheistic views infuriated many and inspired one of the cleverest pieces of graffiti ever to be written about a person: Nietzsche - “God is Dead.”  God - “Nietzsche is Dead.”

Wednesday October 14th 2009 – 6:45pm The News: Louis Vincent Albano, aka Captain Lou Albano has died at the age of 76. He was a former professional wrestler whose WWF fame as a manager in the 1980s was surpassed only by his crossover fame working with Cyndi Lauper when he appeared as her father in the "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" video.

7:45am I received this email - "93, I just wanted to tell you that I have just recently stumbled upon your blog and I must say it is great. Very informative, and also very down to earth and casual, which is really a breath of fresh air. Keep up the Great Work. All the best, 93 93/93 J. Eckert." ...... Reply: Thanks for the kind words. After a week of being really sick, this is the first day that I'm starting to feel my old self again ... its nice to start off on a positive note. Glad you've been enjoying the blog.

7:35am am For the history buffs: Katherine Mansfield Beauchamp was born on this date at Tinakori Road, Wellington, New Zealand in 1888. In her short life she wrote many stories using the pen-name of Katherine Mansfield, these include In a German Pension, Bliss and Other Stories and The Garden Party, to name just a few. Her reckless pursuit of freedom and independence would in time claim her health, making her an invalid and eventually leading to her death. In December of 1911 she met a gentleman who would become her life-long lover, John Middleton Murry. It is said that after “their first meeting, he immediately wrote to her, suggesting she should contribute reviews to Rhythm” a literary magazine, and he also “sent her a volume of Crowley’s verse, and asked for more of her work.” In 1913. Katherine and Gwen Otter wrote a short play together titled Mimi and the Major in which, predictably, they were both the main characters. Gwen being the Major and Katherine playing Mimi. After the play, Gwen invited some of her friends back to her apartment for a private party, to smoke Hash and explore the ‘inner truth’ of their beings. Katherine was persuaded to take part but from their point of view she proved to be a total failure. Instead of showing herself to the expectant gathering as some unmasked and extraordinary female, it appears that she spent the whole time arranging and rearranging with the greatest exactitude the matches from a box which she had in her hand, making patterns on the carpet. It seems, according to witnesses, that Katherine simply kept saying, “That’s much better.” Followed quickly by “Pity that stuff had no effect.” It has also been written that during this evening Katherine felt “sick and unduly irritated at the sight of a picture hanging not perfectly straight on the wall.” Katherine continued to try to talk, ranting about such things as “a princess who lived at the edge of the sea and when she wanted to bathe she just called to the waves ...” In the end, Gwen quietly got rid of the remaining guests and, when she turned around, she found Katherine laying in the middle of the floor. Katherine slowly looked up and asked, as if implying that she was on a boat, “Where are the others? ... Have they gone on deck? It’s lucky it is such a smooth night. Pity the stuff had no effect.” —  After this evening, with ego bruised over the stories of her escapades, it appears Katherine quickly began to distance herself from Aleister Crowley and his associates in an attempt to forget her foolishness. …....….. and finally, I should mention that on October 14, 1920 Anne Lea (Poup’ee) died at Cefalu. She was the daughter of Aleister Crowley and Leah Hirsig (Soror Alostrael).

Tuesday October 13th 2009 – 7:00pm It's been a long day; I woke to massive rain storm, the first of the season. Lots of heavy downpours, wind and debris, trees limbs down everywhere and other stuff all over the place. It looked like a disaster zone outside. Then around 3:40pm the lights went out! Damn! We had another massive power failure in our area. ... 6:45pm And finally, the lights just came back on. Boy, you never realize just how much you rely upon electricity until you don’t have it. I felt like a caveman. No TV, no computer, music, phone or anything ... luckily, I had a lap top.  But typing by candlelight?  Now that was an ordeal!

1:55pm I was lent a movie by Jennifer while celebrating Crowleymas over at her and Jay’s apartment on Saturday. The movie was called AZUMI (Japanese 2003). Chick HERE and go to the bottom of the page if you’d like to read my review. I really enjoyed this movie. I give it three thumbs up, or two thumbs and a toe. .... and, if you haven't noticed, I also posted my review of JU-ON (2000) right above it. Another favorite series of mine.

9:25am For the history buffs: on this date in 1307 throughout France the Knights Templars were arrested for heresy by the order of King Phillip whose main aim was to destroy one of the richest Orders to relieve a severe shortage of cash in his ‘own’ pocket! ……....and Leonard Alfred Schneider, more commonly known as Lenny Bruce, was born on this date in 1925 in a Jewish household on Long Island, New York. He would become a stand-up comedian and brilliant satirist, who aroused much controversy in his time by shocking his audiences, intentionally, with his use of “dirty words” in his nightclub comedy act in the 1950s and 1960s. On June 25, 1966 Bruce gave his last performance at the Fillmore here in California. Five weeks later, on August 3, 1966, Lenny Bruce was dead of a morphine overdose.  He was found lying naked, except for trousers gathered at his ankles, on his tiled bathroom floor. Near his body was a syringe.

11:57pm Dave Miles sent this article posted in The Washington Post under the heading - 'Best Comeback Line Ever.'

"Police arrested Patrick Lawrence, 22-year-old white male, in a pumpkin patch, at 11:38 p.m. on Friday night. On Monday, at the Gwinnett County (GA) courthouse,  Lawrence  was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, public indecency, and public intoxication.
The suspect explained that as he was passing a pumpkin patch on his way home from a heavy drinking session when he decided to stop. 'You know how a pumpkin is soft and squishy inside, and there was no one around for miles or at least I thought there wasn't anyone around,' he stated in a telephone interview.
Lawrence went on to say that he pulled over to the side of the road, picked out a pumpkin that he felt was appropriate to his purpose, cut a hole in it, and proceeded to satisfy his alleged need.  'Guess I was really into it, you know?' he commented with evident embarrassment. In the process of doing the deed,  Lawrence  failed to notice an approaching police car and was unaware of his audience until Officer Brenda Taylor approached him.
'It was an unusual situation, that's for sure,' said Officer Taylor. 'I walked up to  Lawrence  and he's just banging away at this pumpkin.' Officer Taylor went on to describe what happened when she approached  Lawrence.  'I said, 'Excuse me sir, but do you realize that you're having sex with a pumpkin? '
'He froze and was clearly very surprised that I was there, and then he looked me straight in the face and said...
"A pumpkin?  Shit .... is it midnight already?"'

7:20am For the history buffs: How can we forget to mention that on October 12, 1875 or prophet, Aleister Crowley was born Edward Alexander Crowley at 36 Clarendon Square in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire to Edward and Emily Crowley. In his autobiography Crowley claimed he was “remarkable from the moment of his birth. He bore on his body the three most important distinguishing marks of a Buddha. He was tongue-tied, and on the second day of his incarnation a surgeon cut the fraenum linguae. He had also the characteristic membrane, which necessitated an operation for phimosis three lustres later. Lastly, he had upon the centre of his heart four hairs curling from left to right in the exact form of a Swastika.” He’s been called everything from “Wickedest Man in the World” to the “Great Beast 666.” It is on this date that Thelemites around thworld celebrate ‘Crowleymas,’ or the Thelemic holiday honoring the birth of their prophet. He died on December 1, 1947 in Hastings, England of bronchitis and cardiac degeneration. He was 72 years old. It has long been reported that the last thing which the Great Beast tearfully said just before he died, while his hand was gently being held by his dear friend Frieda Harris, was - “I am perplexed!” But this is not true. Although they might have been the last words that he spoke to her, she was not at his bedside when he died. His real last words, which were spoken to his nurse, were - “Sometimes I hate myself.” …….... And years later, on October 12, 1915 Crowley wrote - “I should unquestionably have become insane from satisfaction at the fulfillment of my utmost aspirations having been granted to me so superlatively beyond imagination conceived, but for ‘my sense of humor and my common sense.”  Aleister Crowley wrote this on this date upon his attainment to the grade of MAGUS, 9=2. He assumed the magical motto: To Mega Therion, The Great Beast 666. …....….. and it was on October 12, 1977, as previously planned, just as the Sun passed the peak of an eclipse on the birthday of Aleister Crowley, a Charter was signed in Berkeley, California by Frater Hymenaeus Alpha IX 777 (Grady Louis McMurtry) using Crowley’s special Seal Ring of Ankh-af-na-Khonsu. Frater Hymenaeus Alpha signed the Charter as a Magus 9=2. More importantly, after months of deep contemplation, Grady felt that he finally knew his Magickal Word which would create the Universe for which his entire life had prepared him. He uttered three letters – ‘O.T.O.’. According to Grady, this magical affirmation gave birth to Thelema Lodge as The Grand Lodge of the Ordo Templi Orientis. ……….. and finally, this is the day in the year 802,701 that H. G. Wells arrived in the land of the Eloi according to The Time Machine.

The following 'CROWLEYMAS' song is titled 'CROWLEY THE MASTER THERION' and is from the late nineteen-seventies. It is to be sung to the popular tune titled 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.'

Crowley, the Master Therion,
had a talk with Ra-Hoor-Khuit!
and if you ever read it,
you'd embrace Hadit and Nuit!
All of the other Magi,
use to laugh and call him names ...
They never let poor Crowley,
play in any Enochian Chess games!
Then one foggy Solstice night,
Mathers came to plead,
Crowley with your magick might,
please don't eat my soul tonight.
"Not on your Life MacGregor!"
[... the above chorus-like verse is spoken
by someone acting as Crowley, it is not sung]
Then how the magi feared him,
as they fell upon their knees.
Crowley, the Master Therion,
You'll go down in infamy!

Sunday October 10th 2009 3:33pm For the history buffs: Born on this date in 1868 was Percy Bullock, who at the age of twenty-four joined the Golden dawn assuming the motto Frater Levavi Oculos, which means “I will lift up mine eyes.” .............. also, on October 11, 1911, Aleister Crowley met Mary d’este Sturges at a party given by the dancer Isadora Duncan. He asked, “Have you ever had a serpent’s kiss?” and before she could answer yes or no, he bit her on the wrist. The story has it that she developed blood poisoning!

I thought I was feeling better and almost over my flu bug. But it was very cold out and not wanting to get sicker I put a scarf on over my t-shirt. Maybe I should have taken a jacket? Anyway, silly me, I woke this morning ... cough, cough ... feeling ... cough, cough ... like shit. Will I ever learn?  .... On the bright side, I did have a good time last night.

Thursday October 8th 2009 – 7:00am For the history buffs: Pascal Beverly Randolph was born on this date in 1825 at 70 Canal St in New York to a black woman named Flora Beverly, who was said to have been a black princess from Madagascar and to a white father, Edmund Randolph. His father, although not of royal stock, was well known in his own sphere. He had been the Governor of the state of Virginia, was present at the constitutional convention during the birth of the United States, was the Attorney General to President George Washington and in 1794 he became Secretary of State. The marriage between Flora and Edmund was short-lived and his parents separated early, his mother was to die at an early age from one of the many epidemics prevalent at the time. He is credited with being the first overt spokesman in the west of sexual ‘gnosis’ which he claimed had been hidden for centuries in layers of religious symbolism. He is said to be the founder of The Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor which is also known as the Brotherhood of Eulis. He is the author of The Magia Sexualis. On July 29, 1875 Randolph shot himself in head and died in Toledo Ohio. After his death he was succeeded by a Mr. Freeman B Dowd on April 15, 1907, who was succeeded by Dr. Edward H. Brown, who in turn was succeeded by R. Swinburne Clymer. .............. and John Cowper Powys was born on this date in Shirley, Derbyshire, England in 1872. In a letter to his friend Louis Wilkinson dated January 8th 1952, Powys wrote, “My dear, I have been absorbed in the Aleister C. book. I think he suffered from a mental & nervous disease for which I here & now invent the name ‘gynaesclerosis.’ Powys continues, explaining, that this word is “from ‘gynae’ – ‘having to do with the nature of women, and sclerosis’ – ‘the hardening of tissue’, by which I mean that he gradually assumed the physical & mental & emotional qualities of women, but in the process of his taking them on they hardened themselves so that they ceased to resemble the qualities of women, since in these natural qualities there is always a tendency to & power of amazing elasticity or softening of which males are forever taking advantage. The emotions and all the feelings of the sexual act differ in women completely from those which men experience, and Crowley was by inheritance & environment and by the fiat of pure chance an embodiment of all the feelings woman have in the sexual act hardened into a permanent attitude of body & mind.” Powys continues, trying to further clarify his views on the differences between men and women, and then writes, “So when I invent the word ‘Gynaesclerosis’ for Crowley’s whole life’s weird & abnormal history-and this alone explains his peculiar mania for his own breasts and belly - I show how it is a case of the life-long hardening (an almost unique abnormality) of the female feelings that in a women are so quickly changed into something else by softening.” He died on June 17, 1963 at the age of 91 in Wales on this date. He met Aleister Crowley only once. He briefly discussed this meeting saying, “The only time I met Aleister Crowley was when I had to be the Speaker at a Foyle’s Literary Lunch and I had him at my side and I treated him to a bottle of wine which he had finished before my speech was over!” ............. to continue with the ‘birthday theme’, Frank Patrick Herbert, the author of the sc-fi classic Dune (1963) and all its sequels, was born on this date in Tacoma, Washington in 1920. He died on February 12, 1986 after long treatment for Pancreatic cancer at the age of 65. ............. and finally, I should mention that Robert de Grimston was born on this date in Shanghai, China in 1935. His true name was Robert Moore. Years later he and his wife Mary Anne Maclean changed their last name to de Grimston and established the group called The Process Church of the Final Judgment.

Wednesday October 7th 2009 – 10:35am Here are a few more quotes that are often cited on Jungian Internet sites but which I cannot locate the original source. I need the info for my bibliography and index notes to my book on Astrology. Anyone out there know where Carl Jung wrote:

“Astrology, like the collective unconscious with which psychology is concerned, consists of symbolic configurations: the planets are the gods, symbols of the power of the unconscious.” - Carl Gustav Jung

“We are born at a given moment in a given place and like vintage years of wine we have the qualities of the year and of the season in which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything else.” - Carl Gustav Jung

I need the book title, publisher info and page. ... HELP!

Also, do any of you have Jung: Letters; Volume II. Edited by G. Adler and A. Jaffe (R.F.C. Hull, trans. London: Routledge and Kegan Paul 1976?  In this book Jung writes:  “The collective unconscious appears to consist of mythological motifs or primordial images, for which reason the myths of all nations are its real exponents. In fact the whole of mythology could be taken as a sort of projection of the collective unconscious. We can see this most clearly if we look at the heavenly constellations, whose originally chaotic forms are organized through the projection of images. This explains the influence of the stars as asserted by astrologers. These influences are nothing but unconscious introspective perceptions of the collective unconscious.”  ..... I need the page number where Jung makes this statement!   HELP!!!

7:00am For the history buffs: The American master of terror, Edgar Allen Poe, was found lying almost unconscious in the gutter outside Ryan’s saloon on Lombard Street in Baltimore. He was taken to the local hospital where he remained delirious with tremors and hallucinations. He went in and out of a coma over the next few days, was even calm and lucid at times, but finally he lapsed into a delirious state, became combative, and required restraint. He died on his fourth day in the hospital; October 7, 1877. He was only 39 years old, had always suffered from bouts of depression and madness and even attempted suicide once in 1848. His death certified states that the cause of Poe’s death was “congestion of the brain.” He was buried in a cemetery next to Westminister Hall at Fayette and Greene Streets. His poem The Raven had appeared in the New York Evening Mirror in January 1845 and was a critical and commercial success. The Fall of the House Of Usher (1839) and The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841) are arguably two of his best short stories. …...….. also, Arnold Crowther was born on this date in Chatham, Kent, England in 1909. He grew up to become a skilled stage magician at sleight-of-hand, ventriloquism, and puppeteering. He had a strong interests in paganism and witchcraft. He was married to the noted witch Patricia Crowther and would become a famous English Witch in his own right. He authored such books as Let’s Put on a Show (1964), Linda and the Lollipop Man (1973), Yorkshire Customs (1974), Hex Certificate (late 1970s). His greatest claim to fame in witchcraft is that he was the person responsible for introducing Gerald B Gardner to Aleister Crowley in 1947. He died on May 1, 1974.

Tuesday October 6th 2008 – 4:20am For the history buffs: Arthur Edward Waite joined Arthur Machen’s Drinking Society on this date in 1902 which was called ‘Rabelaisian Order of Tosspots.’ He assumed the title of Master Basil. …….. and Thor Heyerdahl was born on this date in Larvik, Norway in 1914. He was a noted anthropologist and adventurer who gained world-wide press coverage in 1947 with his trip on the wooden raft named the Kon-Tiki in order to prove his theory that people from South America could have sailed to Polynesia. He died on April 18, 2002. ……… and finally, on October 6, 1966 all research on mescaline, LSD and psilocybin came to a halt when the FDA placed them all on a ‘Schedule 1’ drug classification. MDMA was placed on Schedule 1 in July of 1985. This is the same class as marijuana, heroin and cocaine. “Schedule 1 is supposed to be reserved for drugs that have no medical use, are addictive and destructive to human tissue, and cause social destruction, diseases and accidents.”

I replied - "Hi Joe 93. Yes, the topic was dropped ... everyone seemed to be off and running the week that I posted this as a topic of discussion. I'll try again in the future to see if I get some replies. Personally, I think all the Thelemites simply got scared off by me mentioning the concept of something to do with ‘Light’ ?   I’ll have to word the discussion title a little more darker when I post it again.
Ah, my health, it is a bit tricky these days. Heart just isn’t what is use to be ... I’m back in the hospital next month. I guess a life of travel, partying and excess has finally caught up with me.  Life!  I’ve enjoyed it.

I said it before, I'll say it again, this is by far one of the best newsletters being produced. This issue is titled 'THE PROCESS, The Last Word on the Final Judgment' and the lengthy historical article 'Unveiling the Mysteries of the Process Chruch' by Hiram Corso is well written, well researched. There is also a fascinating one on one interview of Timothy Wyllie the author of the latest book on The Process. Another Mirror is published by Gammon House Publishing out of West Virginia. If you want to know more write: friends_of_gammon_house@yahoo.com. Again, job well done guys, this is a great issue!

8:00am For the history buffs: Guido von List was born on this date in 1848. He was a noted Austrian esotericist who founder Ariosophy. At the age of fourteen built a temple to the god Wotan complete with altar in the crypt of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. It was his writings on the divine nature of the Germanic race, along with Lanz von Liebenfels, whom Adolf Hitler read avidly in the journal titled Ostara. List also published the book titled The Secret of the Runes. He died on May 17, 1919. ….....… and on October 5, 1930 the British airship known as the R 101 crashed in flames on a hillside in Beauvais, France killing 48 of its 54 passengers. What makes this story unique is that two days afterwards an anxious voice of a man claiming to be Flight Lieutenant H. Carmichael Irwin spoke through the lips of the medium Eileen Garrett while she sat in a trance during a séance at the National Laboratory of Psychical Research in London, which had been set up four years earlier by Harry Price, a well-known psychic investigator. The Captain spoke in short disjointed sentences as he described in-depth the horrifying last moments before his incineration. Because of the worldwide interest in the crash, the séance also attracted worldwide attention and this was also due to a reporter, present at the séance, who put the news story out at once. What made the story even more amazing is that the ‘spirit’ included a wealth of technical information that was confirmed six months later by an official lnquiry. …...…. And Anthony R. Naylor was born on this date in 1949. He had no prior involvement with Magic(k) or the Occult until given Crowley’s Thoth Tarot deck in 1987. Having researched the deck he began collecting Crowley first editions.  In 1989 he founded Mandrake Press Ltd. as an excuse to buy desktop publishing software. The first book he published was Aleister Crowley’s The Forbidden Lecture (1990) - many more Crowley titles followed including a facsimile of The Equinox (1992), O.T.O. Rituals and Sex Magick together with numerous volumes of Crowley's poetry. Has also published books by or about the artist Austin O. Spare and is responsible as author, editor and compiler of the classic series entitled From the Inferno To Zos (1993/95 …....….. and finally, on October 5, 1952 Clive Barker was born in Liverpool, England. He is a leading author of contemporary horror. His distinctive style is characterized by the notion of hidden fantastical worlds existing side by side with our own. About him, the popular author Stephen King once said, “I have seen the future of horror and its name is Clive Barker.” His Books of Blood (1984-1985), which are a series of short stories, are classics. In these appear such noted stories as Hellraiser and Rawhead Rex. Other books of note are The Hellbound Heart (1986) and Cabal (1985), the latter which was released as a movie retitled Nightbreed.

Sunday October 4th 2009 – 9:00am Well folks, my son & I watched a great Japanese movie last night. It's called TOKYO ZOMBIE (2005) The movie is a zombie comedy based on a dark comic manga by the same name. It is directed by Sakichi Sato the writer of Ichii the Killer (Sakichi Sato) and the director of that film was Takeshi Miike, and his two co-conspirators, Tadanobu Asano and Sho Aikawa, are the main stars in Tokyo Zombie!  So, how can you go wrong with this movie? Click HERE to read my review. It was added at the bottom of the page. The review in FANGORIA said it best – “It’s essentially as if KUNG FU HUSTLE and SHAUN OF THE DEAD had a baby.”

7:30am Dave sent me an email yesterday regarding the source of Carl Jung's quote that we've been looking for which is posted on Wikipedia. [see our posting of Sept.21st 1:140am] The quote is - “The alchemists, who in their own way knew more about the nature of the individuation process than we moderns do, expressed this paradox through the symbol of the Ouroboros, the snake that eats its own tail.  Ouroboros, has been said to have a meaning of infinity or wholeness. In the age-old image of the Ouroboros lies the thought of devouring oneself and turning oneself into a circulatory process, for it was clear to the more astute alchemists that the prima materia of the art was man himself.” ...... According to Wikipedia it is found in Jung's Mysterium Coniunctionis but all research says that this is wrong. However, yesterday Dave pointed out that the first half of the quote - “The alchemists, who in their own way knew more about the nature of the individuation process than we moderns do, expressed this paradox through the symbol of the Ouroboros, the snake that bites its own tail." is found in Jung's Aion on pg.190.  ... Not bad, we're getting closer but I fear I'm just going to have to rewrite the info in the original long quote and make it my own. I can't afford any more of my gray hair falling out.  ... Thanks Dave.

7:30an For the history buffs : On this date in 1967, shortly after 11:00pm, ‘something’ crashed into the bay by the tiny fishing village of Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia. It was described as being about 60 feet long with 4 lights that flashed in sequence. After it hovered for a few minutes, it descended at a 45 degree angle and, upon impact with the water; there was a bright flash and an explosive roar. The crash was viewed by at least 20 witnesses who said that just before sinking, it looked like it was flat dome shaped. The crash was originally phoned into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Detachment in Barrington Passage, Nova Scotia by a young fisherman, describing it as a possible ‘airliner’ impacting the surface of the waters adjacent to Shag Harbour. Canadian Navy and RCMP divers were brought in on the morning of October 6 to recover the wreckage but all attempts were unsuccessful. Nothing was ever found. Today, many believe that it was a UFO that crashed into Shag harbor. ….....…. And it was on October 4, 2363 that the day the USS Enterprise, NCC 1701-D, was officially commissioned and launched.

Saturday October 3rd 2009 – 4:00pm Ricky writes - "Jerry 93! I've really been enjoying these papers 'From the Caliph'! and would like to thank both you and Fr. Petros for making them available!
Interestingly enough, I was thinking the other day about the attribution of the the Pineal gland to the Ajna chakra and in turn to Chokmah. Since this gland is said to produce the chymical DMT which induces dreams, spiritual experiences and the like, it seemed very much akin to Yesod and thus the 2=9 equation popped back up.
In some traditions it is said that the Spirit enters the fetus through this gland and I think this resonates with the function of Chokmah but do you think that it is a 'one time' decent or can the Spirit rise and descend as the Kundalini does? Also if we look at Yesod as the our Soul and the doorway by which we perceive the higher plains then there is a certain affinity that these two have, sort of octaves.
It seems interesting to note that these two functioning fully simultaneously (assuming Spirit can descend as Kundalini rises) would allow our Spirit and Kundalini to 'meet' within Tiphareth (attainment of Higher Self?).
I'm not sure if any of this will make sense or not, it was just an interesting thought spurred by "The Underground Stream".
What do you think about all this?

10:45am Jay writes regarding my political rant - "93 Jerry, You and I have talked about this a bit and I still think that the most Thelemic conception of government is Libertarianism, that is Minarchy (smallest possible government), maximum social liberty (legal drugs, legal prostitution, guns etc) and the right to own property coupled with fiscal conservatism or a lack of obligation to give up one's money for any purpose. This, I think, is most in line with Thelemic morality. Republicans are usually far from socially liberal though. In fact, it seems most of the time it's the people on the right that come out swinging hardest against gay marriage, prostitution, drugs (who launched the war on drugs but the Republican poster boy himself) etc. Not that Democrats have a history of being open minded about these issues either, but Republicans do tend to get more tied up with radical Christian moralizing. As far as smallest possible government goes, I've always loved the idea, but am really unsure as to how it can be put into practice in the modern world. That is, how do we strip down the density of beauracracy that already exists? At this point I guess the aim is to avoid creating more government. As far as fiscal conservatism goes, I'm never sure as to how we draw the line. Do you believe there should be no taxes whatsoever? Then how do we build bridges, repair roads etc? Who will pay our political leaders? I don't claim to have any answers, just the questions...
Having said all that, I don't think that Democrats or Republicans live up to what they claim really at all. For most leftists the Democrats are too moderate and pretty consistently sell out the people they claim to represent. You've often pointed out that their "socialist" leanigs are hypocrisy anyway as Democrats tend to be richer than Republicans. And I personally have never heard a single Republican emphasize the values of small government, of the right of the states to govern themselves (medical Marijuana in California anybody?) nor have I seen Republican legislators actively uphold these values. Yes, they're strong on fiscal conservatism, but it seems that the rest of the core Republican values are rarely in sight.
Love, Jay  93 93/93

Reply: Obviously you believe that Democrats never trash Bush and have never fabricated any lies about him while he was in office, right?  Shall I bother to mention the former CBS News anchor Dan Rather? What about Michael Moore? Shall I go on? Lets be honest, both parties have supporters who equally trash the other, otherwise how can the Party convince the masses that they're correct and other is wrong?
Anyway, I don't totally agree with your views because I believe that you don't fully understanding legalities in our government but that is what makes politics so amusing ... alot of what you say about the Republications is way off and typically what Democratic 'propaganda' vomits here in Berkeley. In truth; both parties have alot of good, and alot of bad.  It's easy to hold the negatives up as if it is typical of either party in general but never forget; don't confuse Federal and State Laws ... the Government as a whole in Washington has 'Federal Laws' ... which is why Republicans like Democrats in Washington get involved in some local issues... (i.e. medical Marijuana etc) ... but remember the Republican view of 'Smaller Government' simply means creating less Federal Laws affecting States ... however, Democrats want to make more 'Federal Laws' than the Republicans; it is called their Socialistic world view. They believe that all states should be equal, all states run by Big Brother in Washington. But Federal Laws are far more harder to change than State Laws, hence the problem with the medical Marijuana laws here in Califoirnia. So, do we want someone making more Federal Laws?
In truth, yes both Parties create Federal Laws affecting all states ... but Democrats want 100% control coming out of Washington.  That scares me.
Finally, as a Thelemite, I'd rather have a radical Christian whom I can look in the eyes and fight rather that someone stabbing me in the back claiming to be my friend ...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8:15am Living here in Berkeley has always been a dilemma for me. It's a city of fools who think that they're being political correct while babbling ignorance in an often drug induced haze. It annoys the Hell out of me. In College I was taught to carefully examine the views and policies of both political parties, both Democratic and Republican, before making my mind up on any issue.  And I know that I’ve gotten rather hostile lately regarding my politics so I thought I’d make my point clear as to where I stand:

(1. First, and foremost, I’m a Thelemite.

(2. I want less government, not more.

This automatically implies that I lean more toward the Republican Party rather than the Democrats. The latter advocates a form of socialism in which the Government wants to oversees everything that you do with excessive rules, regulations and Laws while advocating equal access or allocation of all resources to everyone. Personally; I don't want anyone telling me, or especially my son in the future, that he must pay outrageous taxes so that those the less fortunate can have his money. To me, the slaves shall serve. Fuck em'. I don’t completely agree with capitalism, or the Republicans but I sure as Hell as a Thelemite don’t agree with Democratic propaganda stating that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society as it points its finger at Republicans. - It's a lie! - Facts are, the wealth is equally spread between both parties. So what about all those filthy rich Democrats; those politicians, musicians, TV stars, actors and actresses; the Hollywood elite and others who want to to stand up and tell us how we should support the poor? When they step up to plate and put their money where their mouth is and give away their excess millions to the less fortunate, or to bail out California, then I’ll agree with their world view but you know and I know, they’re not going to do that … they simply want to raise middle classes’ taxes while using tax shelters and good lawyers so that they can find loopholes. ... Both parties have been doing this for ages, wake up folks.

However: which party do you lean toward as a Thelemite?

(1. Republicans believe in Capitalism; the rich get richer and those who don't work, starve. Each individual aspires to his or her own needs and creates their own Universe with as little Government intervention as possible. Hence, each individual can become their own King. ... In brief; States rule States.

(2. Democrats also believe in Capitalism but don't be fooled; it's closet Communism. The money of rich ruling Democrats is theirs while everyone else's' money should be taken away and given to the poor so that they'll vote Democratic. Hence, the Slaves shall serve. Like Communism, Democrats want more rules, regulations and Laws in order to control your every waking moment. ... In brief; the central Government rules all States.

Here in Berkeley there is always a false sense of 'entitlement' in the air. It's because Democrats promise to give the ‘people’ free stuff and in return, the ‘people’ blindly vote for them. It's an animal mentality. Pet a dog, throw him an occasional bone taken from the leg of somebody probably still alive and the dog will follow you blindly. But I’m not a ‘slave’ ... Don't come to my apartment trying to tell me how great Obama and the Democrats are doing ... it means to me that you're advocate the extinction of my personal FREEDOM.
.... the problem that I see with most 'Democratic' supporting Thelemites ... is that they are not REAL Thelemites. They don't live by The Book of the Law. They're just closet Christians using Thelema as a loop-hole so that they can be naughty little children on the weekends.
Ok, I'm ranting again ... I'll put my sword away.

5:50am For the history buffs: Hippolyte Leon Denizard Rivail was born on this date in Lyon, France in 1804. He was more commonly known by the pseudonym of Allan Kardec. Many consider him to be the father of the modern doctrine of ‘Spiritism’, also called ‘Kardecism.’ In his fifties he became interested in the wildly popular phenomenon of spirit-rapping and began research the topic. He is best known for his classic, Le Livre des Esprits (The Spirits’ Book), which was first published in 1856. Within this book he expounded a new theory of human life and destiny which he based on trance communications. In fact, his pseudonym originated from mediumistic communications. Both the names Allan and Kardec were said to have been his names in two previous incarnations. He wrote such other books as  The Gospel as Explained by Spirits (1864); Heaven and Hell (1865) and Genesis (1867). He died on March 31, 1869. …....…. And Annie Elizabeth Fredericka Horniman was born on this date in Forest Hill in Lewisham in 1860, the daughter of a wealthy family. In the late 1880s she pursued her enduring interests in the occult by becoming deeply involved in The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which was a secret occult society founded by Samuel Liddell Mathers in 1888. It was in this fraternity that Horniman first made the acquaintance of the Irish poet, W. B. Yeats and the actress, Florence Farr. She was known as Soror Fortiter Et Recte. She was deeply involved in the Order and was once the official ‘scribe’ whom some claimed should never have gotten the position because “it was almost certainly a mistake. It seems Mrs. Horniman was obviously a difficult person to get on with as shown by her irreverently bestowed nickname - “Pussy.” She remained a member of the Order until 1903. She died in her sleep at Shere in Surrey on August 6, 1937 …....…. And finally, to continue with birthdays:  Paul Foster Case was born in Fairport, New York on this date in 1884. His mother was a teacher and his father was the head librarian. Case was initiated into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn on May 16, 1920, while visiting the Praemonstrator Michael Whitty. He took the magical motto of ‘Perseverantia’ at the Thoth-Hermes Temple of the Golden Dawn (Alpha et Omega) in New York. He later went on to establish the Los Angeles occult school known as the Builders of the Adytum (B.O.T.A.). He died on March 2, 1954 while vacationing in Mexico with his second wife Harriet.

7:00am There is alot to report today for the history buffs: Arthur Edward Waite was born on this date in 1857. He was an English Christian mystic, writer on Masonic and occult subjects and a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. He established the order known as The Fellowship of the Rosy Cross which Aleister Crowley once wrote; “...has substituted a pompous, turgid rigmarole of bombastic platitudes for the neophyte ritual, so that the last spark of interest is extinct for ever.” Ada Waite, his wife, died on September 18, 1924. She always remained a curious nebulous figure throughout his life. It has been written that there is “...no assignable limit to her capacity for sleeping and when awake she was such ‘unassailable taciturnity” that “she never spoke willingly, and seldom answered anyone except upon extreme pressure, this silence became itself a kind of eloquence.” Waite died on May 19, 1943. …....…. And on October 2, 1890 Julius ‘Groucho’ Marx was born in New York City. He was part of one of the world’s most famous comedy teams; the others two members being his brothers Chico and Harpo. Many of his one-liners are still being quoted to this day, like: “Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes?”, “I never forget a face, but in your case I’ll be glad to make an exception.” Or, “A man’s only as old as the woman he feels.” …....…. and to continue with the birthday theme; on October 2, 1914 John ‘Jack’ Marvel Whiteside Parsons was born in Pasadena, California. He was a writer, visionary, dedicated occultist, rocket scientist and chemist. He helped create the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, now a major industrial complex. His rocket experiments were often conducted behind the Devil’s Gate Dam in Pasadena, near the present day Jet-Propulsion Laboratory. He worked with such great minds in rocketry as Eric Von Karmen, Frank Malina, Jack Williamson and Edward S. Forman. In fact, Parsons’ ideas regarding solid-propellant rocket fuel would aid the first American rocket-assisted takeoff on August 12th in 1941. His exploits in rocketry are so famous that it gained him the honor of having a crater on the Moon named after him, appropriately enough on the dark side. On February 15, 1941 at 7:45pm, Jack Parsons and his wife, Helen, joined Aleister Crowley’s O.T.O. taking both Minerval and First Degree Initiation on the same evening. Jack would later take Probationer in the AA under Wilfred T. Smith on March 22nd; taking the magickal motto of ‘Thelema Obtentum Procedero Amoris Nuptiae’, which Crowley later commented was “couched in a language beyond my powers of understanding.” Parsons later assumed Lodge Master of Agape Lodge after Wilfred T. Smith resigned. In time Parsons would also become known by such names as Frater Belarion, Frater 210 or the self-proclaimed ‘Antichrist.’ He died on June 17, 1952. He and his wife, Marjorie Elizabeth Cameron, had their trailer already packed and were ready to move to Mexico for a time but this date would end their plans. Jack accidentally dropped a can of mercury fulminate in his ground floor laboratory. His lab was an old four-car garage apartment that had once been the stable of the estate located at 1071 South Orange Grove Avenue, which had once been Agape Lodge. The first people to arrive after the blast found the huge stable doors blown off their hinges, two walls gone, windows shattered and a gaping hole torn through the ceiling timbers revealing the second floor apartment. They found Jack Parsons underneath a massive double-tub laundry fixture that had landed on top of him along with a section of the wall. All the newspapers at the time reported that he was actually conscious even though he was badly burned and mangled. In fact, Jane Wolfe would later tell Grady McMurtry that Jack “was in so deep a case of shock that he gave instructions regarding the removal of a bath tub which had landed on his back. Yet getting to the hospital [Huntington Memorial Hospital] he became inarticulate, lapsed into unconsciousness” and he died shortly thereafter. One newspaper wrote that, “The explosion blew off his right forearm, tore a gaping hole in his jaw and shattered the other arm and both legs.” Jane also told Grady, “Jack was badly mutilated; no one was permitted to see the body.” He was later cremated on July 19th. Jane wrote, “There was no service for Jack; Candy [i.e. Cameron] and two young men, in silence held a lighted-candle vigil.” Jack’s obituary referred to the service simply as - “secret rites.” …....…. and finally, on October 2, 1917 Rosaleen Norton was born in Dunedin, Australia. She claimed to have experienced various forms of psychic apparitions throughout her life and considered them part of the natural order of the universe. She started drawing at aged 3, but was expelled from Chatswood Girls Grammar School after disrupting her classmates by drawing bizarre pictures of supernatural phenomena. She studied art at East Sydney Technical College, where her vivid imagination was encouraged, and she started exploring ritual and the occult, later experimenting with hypnotic trance states. In 1952 she released The Art Of Rosaleen Norton, with poems by Gavin Greenlees but it became heralded as indecent by the newspapers of the day and, as time went by, rumors began to spread about Black Masses and Rosaleen’s devil cult. She became known as the “Witch of Kings Cross.” She supported herself by selling her paintings and making charms and hexes for a chosen few. She spent her last years with her cats, music and books, and she died of colon cancer on December 5, 1979.

Thursday October 1st 2009 – 7:40am I have uploaded the 22nd installment of a series which Frater Hymenaeus Alpha 777 (Grady Louis McMurtry) wrote on magick and philosophy. The series is titled FROM THE CALIPH. The first installment appeared in The Magickal Link in October of 1981. I wish to thank Frater Petros of Leaping Laughter Clerk House for making this page possible by scanning the original and computer entering it into a Word file. The latest installment was originally published in The Magickal Link, Volume III No.7 July 1983e.v. and is titled ON THE UNWOBBLING PIVOT.  Click HERE for details.

7:30am For the history buffs: Aleister Crowley recorded on this date in 1901 that he obtained his first Dhyana and adds that it “had washed my brain completely out.” Dhyana refers to a meditative state where an individual surrenders to the emptiness of space and experiences egolessness, whereby he transcends the awareness of time. In Crowley’s Book IV, Part I, he tried to define what Dhyana by writing, “Let us try a final definition. Dhyana resembles Samadhi in many respects. There is a union of the ego and the non-ego, and a loss of the sense of time and space and causality. Duality in any form is abolished. The idea of time involves that of two consecutive things, that of space two non-coincident things, that of causality two connected things.” ……..… Philip Emmons Isaac Bonewits was born in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1949. His parents were devout Roman Catholics, from whom he acquired an appreciation for religion. On June 16, 1970 he graduated from The University at Berkeley at a time when the Berkeley’s individual ‘group-study program’ allowed people to create their own degree course. He was the first and last person ever to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Magic and Thaumaturgy. Sadly, the publicity about Bonewits’ degree so embarrassed the University administrators that ‘Magic, Witchcraft and Sorcery’ has been banned from the individual group-study programs ever since. Bonewits is the author of the book titled Real Magic which was released in 1971. In the same year at the annual ‘Aleister Crowley Birthday Party’ in Berkeley, California, Grady Louis McMurtry the head of the Ordo Templi Orientis met Bonewits. Grady would later remark, “Stupid me, I thought he was Jewish, name, appearance, etc., but trust that clever Phyllis [i.e. his wife]. She just right out asked him if he wasn’t a Catholic, and he said, well, yes, in a way.” The author Israel Regardie would later joke to Grady in a letter that he too, had made the same mistake about ‘Bonewitz’ by calling him “a smart-aleck Jew” with “a fat ego,” admitting the Jewish part, of course, was wrong. ……..… and on October 1, 1968 the cult classic Night of The Living Dead, a low budget, black and white movie, opened in theaters. The plot is painfully simple. A satellite falls from space and upon crashing it unleashes radiation which causes the recently deceased to rise from the grave, very hungry and in quest of the living for food. This entire movies centers around a group of people barricaded in an old farmhouse who are fighting for their life. Outside are hordes of relentless, utterly grotesque rotting zombies who can only be killed by a blow to the head.
