ON DOWN AMONG THE WIREHEADS
Here is a letter from Aleister Crowley:
“High Enterprise.”  That is presumably something different from ordinary events.

There is a lot of lemming in most people, even when they deny it.  We react to social pressures automatically far more than we realize.  It is the simplist (sic) way to remain invisible, to simply go about your business of doing your Will without being bothered by people who are guided on rails of conventional morality.  AL I:41

“They feel little, these wireheads; what is, is balanced by weak joys…” as it might have been written.  Or, “These are dead, these fellows; they feel not.”  II:18  And so what are wireheads?  People who go thru life with their heads wired like the plug board on a computer, “the slaves of because” II:54, the programmed people who have had their heads (sic) mind-set from the age of 1 that there is only one religion, one morality (the Majority, of course), one set of rules, one set of conventional morality in a sea of conformity.  We are talking about your relatives, everyday America, the people you escaped from when you couldn’t stand their bullshit anymore.  On the one hand we are the most radical people in the world w/our Thelemic interpretation of Liber AL.  But sometimes we forget, being overwhelmed as we all are with the problems of every-day living.

And sometimes we become confused and forget the imperatives of our joy.  “Come forth, o children, under the stars, & take your fill of love!  I am above you and in you.  My ecstasy is in yours.  My joy is to see your joy.” I”12-13  “Beauty and strength, leaping laughter and delicious languor, force and fire, are of us.” II:20  “But exceed! Exceed!” I:71

And what is the engine of this change?  “Now ye shall know that the chosen priest & apostle of infinite space is the prince-priest the Beast; and in his woman called the Scarlet Woman is all power given.” I:15  So where are those Power Houses now that we need them?  Undoubtedly waiting for the cycles to Manifest, as usual.

On the other hand, “Poetry is the geyser of the Unconscious,” as Crowley reminds us in the Apologia to LOLA.  Here is something of mine.

Nadir
“I have stood upon the battlements
Of ebon stone, and jet
Black light has bathed my body
The Brothers of the Shadow
In the gloom that never fades
Have welcomed me to keeps that guard
The gulf thrown palisades.
I have stood in their Cathedrals
And the hymns of hate I’ve sung.
I have heard the Mass of Mendes
Chaunted by a slitted tongue.
I have taught the works of blasphemy
With succubi I’ve lain
By necromancy I have raised
The phantoms of the slain.
My steed has been the basilisk,
My armor was a spell,
By sorcery I could command
The fiery gods of Hell.
In monasteries of the Night
I’ve worn the hooded gown
With monks who crucify The Toad.
Where endless stairs go down
To stagnant Wells of Shadow
Where the Four Great Princes stand.
I am alone.  I am alone!
Dead.  In a charnel land.
  9-28-41 e.v.

“I am alone: there is no God where I am.” II:23  In the Arkaddian tradition, the Skull in the Orchard.  A reminder that to take an incarnation is to “enter the tomb of transgression.”

Crowley liked this poem very much.  When I came swinging jauntily into 93 Jermyn St. one sunny morning in the Fall of 1943 e.v. he met me at the door saying, “Oh there you are!  A line from one of your poems has been running around in my head and I can’t get it out.”  The line was

“I have heard the Mass of Mendes
Chaunted by a slitted tongue.”

And how is this Power to operate?  At this level your H.G.A. is dealing with you in the same way as Nuit with us where She says, “I am Heaven, and there is no other God than me, and lord my Hadit.” I:21  How?  “Work, & be our bed in working!”  II:66  Bed.  Palanquin (APeRIVAN = # 347) (Liber D nee Sepher Sepheroth) Cant.iii 9 Bridal bed; nuptial chariot. At the same time, “There is great danger in me; for who doth not understand these runes shall make a great miss.” II:27  “Let the Scarlet Woman beware!  If pity and compassion and tenderness visit her heart; if she leave my work to toy with old sweetnesses; then shall my vengeance be known.” III:43  “But let her raise herself in pride!”III:44  “Then I will lift her to pinnacles of power…” III:45   “I am the secret Serpent coiled about to spring: in my coiling there is joy.  If I lift up my head, I and my Nuit are one.” II:26  And so we remind ourselves of the difference between Thelemites and wireheads.  We discovered early on that the wiring was an adjustable head-set.  The only question was your choice of weapons.  “But there are means and means.” I:51  “Nor let fools mistake love; for there are love and love.  There is the dove, and there is the serpent.  Choose ye well!  He, my prophet, hath chosen, knowing the law of the fortress, and the great mystery of the House of God.” I:57  High enterprise!

Blessed Beast!
